Viola Benson Tracy was born on July 22, 1882 to Jones Watson and Rose (Norwood) Tracy in Mount Desert, Maine. Viola, a 15 year old housemaid, married John Carroll (1875-1964), the son of Jacob William and Rebecca (Whitmore) Lurvey Carroll, on April 10, 1896 in Mount Desert, Maine. Viola Benson (Tracy) Carroll died on September 17, 1940 in Southwest Harbor, Maine.

The dates for Viola’s birth and her wedding to John were changed in family folklore because she was so young when she married. The dates given here are correct as they appear on the Carroll’s Certificate of Marriage.

John and Viola moved into the Mountain House in 1900. They moved further into the town of Southwest Harbor in 1917.
