Bessie and her sister Annie attended the Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine in 1908. The town of Southwest Harbor paid their tuition. Bessie taught history, mathematics, geography and physical training at Castine Normal School in 1921 and earned Bachelor’s and Masters degrees at Columbia University Teachers College in 1931-32.
