Higgins - Edwin Lemuel Higgins (1849-1938)

Edwin Lemuel Higgins was born to Edwin Melville and Julia A. (Brown) Higgins in 1849. Edwin married Alice E. Strout on November 25, 1878 in Millbridge, Maine. Alice was born to James and Mary (Cory) Strout on February 29, 1852 in Cherryfield, Maine. Edwin and Alice had one son, Fred J. Higgins, born on December 3, 1881 in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Alice was the Summer Librarian at the Southwest Harbor Public Library in at least 1925, 1926, 1927, and 1931. Edwin died in 1938 and Alice E. (Strout) Higgins died on November 11, 1941 in Bath, Maine.

Edwin L Higgins (1849-1938) was a grandson of Reuben Higgins (1774-1850) and his wife Joanne Mayo (1775-1840).

"E.L. Higgins built a blacksmith shop on the site now occupied by the Worcester store building and he carried on his work there for many years. He sold it to be used as a livery stable and it was destroyed by fire. Then Mr. Higgins bought back the land and built a store there for his son, Fred J. Higgins. After he went out of business and moved away, the building was sold to B.C. Worcestor who remodeled it somewhat and the upper part is now living apartments while the lower floor is used by the public schools at present as a place for the classes in Domestic Science." - Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine by Mrs. Seth S. Thornton, p. 159-60 - 1938. This refers to another time in the history of the Higgins store.

Edwin L. Higgins is not to be confused with house carpenter, Edwin Leon Higgins (1867-1939) who lived in Southwest Harbor during many of the same years. The two men were not related. Edwin L. Higgins was known as E.L. Higgins. Edwin Leon Higgins was known as Leon.

"E.L. Higgins built the house (39 Clark Point Road) east of the Lawler place in 1884 and planted the trees around the lot. In 1925 he sold the place to Mrs. Fred Wescott and remodeled a small building on Maple Lane which he owned into the cottage where he and his wife now spend their summers." - Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine by Mrs. Seth S. Alice E. Higgins owned the house up to 1926.
