Richard Cushing Paine was born to Robert Treat and Ruth (Cabot) Paine on December 26, 1893 in Boston, Massachusetts. Richard married Ellen Peabody Eliot (1894-1987), daughter of Charles and Mary Yale (Pitkin) Eliot. Ellen was the daughter of Charles Eliot, founder of the Champlain Society and granddaughter of Charles William Eliot, renowned educator, president of Harvard University from 1869-1909. Richard Cushing Paine was the third founding partner of State Street Research and Management Company, which, among other investments, managed the endowment of Harvard University.
