Adonirum Bird Cough was born to Daniel Cough and Elvira (Higgins) Cough in Bass Harbor in 1872. He married Helen Luella Desisles (1875-1947), daughter of Edwin G. Desisles and Hannah A. (Berry) Desisles, on October 2, 1901 in Lamoine, Maine. By 1900 he was a grocery merchant in Bar Harbor on Cottage Street with his brother, Ezra Raphael Cough. Adonirum had financial difficulties and lost the store. He went on to manage a grocery store in Watertown, Massachusetts from at least 1920 to 1930. By 1940 he was a salesman for business supplied in Lamoine, Maine. Adonirum Bird Cough died in 1949 and was buried at East Lamoine Cemetery.
