Alma E. Hallenborg, age 82, died in Bar Harbor on October 31, 1982.

She was born October 5, 1899 (or 1900?), in New York City, the daughter of the late Mrs. Emily Stewart Hallenborg and Axel W. Hallenborg. A brother, Charles Edward Hallenborg, of New York City, predeceased her.

Miss Hallenborg grew up in Newport, VT. She was a registered nurse receiving her nurse's training at Flower Hospital in New York. During World War II, she served with the First General Hospital Unit of the U.S. Army in England, France and Germany.

Prior to the war, Miss Hallenborg lived and worked in New York City at the Gotham Book Mark, where she was assistant to the founder, Miss Frances Steloff, and at Scribners Book Store on Fifth Avenue.

For several seasons, Miss Hallenborg worked at the Brown & Himebaugh Book Store on Main Street in Bar Harbor. After World War II, she purchased the business. The Mount Desert Bookstore, with its distinctive sign depicting a seagull on a maroon background, was soon relocated from Main to Mount Desert Street, where it was known and patronized by book lovers all over Mt. Desert Island.

Miss Hallenborg, who lived in Southwest Harbor, served from 1948 until 1959 as winter librarian of the Southwest Harbor Public Library. At the library, her talent for book selection served the public well and she added many fine books to the collection during her tenure.

Miss Hallenborg is survived by a niece, Jane Hallenborg Peters and a grand niece, Marjorie Stewart Peters, of New York City.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory to the Southwest Harbor Library would be appreciated.
