Gilley - Alice E. (Gilley) Gilley (1856-1938)

Alice E. (Gilley) Gilley was the granddaughter of William Gilley (1782-1872}.

She was a great granddaughter of William Gilley (1746-1839). Her husband, Charles Brown Gilley, was a grandson of that William Gilley, so they were first cousin once removed.

Alice was a "character" who smoked a "TD" pipe. Her great-great-nephew, Ralph Warren Stanley, in his book, "The Stanleys of Cranberry Isle...and Other Colorful Characters," paints a charming verbal portrait of her.

"TD" Pipe - A White Ball Clay Pipe originally made by London pipe maker, Thomas Dormer (1748-1770) whose pipes were stamped with his initials. The term has come to stand for these pipes, sometimes found in archaeological digs.
