The town of Tremont split from Eden and was incorporated on June 4, 1848. It included what is now Southwest Harbor. The eastern part of Bass Harbor was then known as East Bass Harbor.
East Bass Harbor was changed to McKinley in 1897.
McKinley was changed to Bass Harbor on August 1, 1966.
