William was a partner in the firm of Dickey & Sawtelle of Bangor. He was a successful hardware merchant and later bought out Sawtelle to change the firm to William P. Dickey & Co. – Hardware. They sold everything from sperm oil cartridges to step ladders at the store at 48 Broad Street in Bangor.
