Joseph Irving Simmons was the brother of Grace Marian Simmons, a strong supporter of the Southwest Harbor Public Library. He summered in Southwest Harbor at the E.R. Underwood Cottage.

He was also the Vice President of the John Simmons Company, an iron and steel pipe company
